Between Town Hall and Town Center are two new tables that the town hopes will help combat loneliness.

The “Happy to Chat” tables, which the town received in November 2025, are intended to encourage social connection and reduce loneliness. The tables have three seats attached, with the fourth space open.

According to Public Health Nurse Jackie Barmashi, “Loneliness is a significant public health concern across the nation, so much so that the 2023 U.S. Surgeon General’s Report is dedicated to our loneliness and isolation epidemic.”

The town decided to get the tables after learning about the Emerson Health Community Benefit Social Isolation Fund, which provided a grant.

“Emerson Hospital’s most recent Community Health Needs Assessment identified a need in many participating communities to address loneliness and strengthen social connection,” Barmashi stated. “In response to this, Emerson offered a grant opportunity for initiatives to address these issues.”

According to Barmashi, people have been using the tables, especially as the weather has become warmer.

As another way to combat loneliness, Mallory Fuller from the town’s Youth and Family Services Department will host a Yellow Tulip Project and rock-painting event Monday, May 4, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the area between Town Hall and Town Center where the Happy to Chat tables are located.

Barmashi stated that over the fall, Youth and Family Services worked with the Yellow Tulip Project and Emerson Hospital to plant a Hope Garden of 200 tulip bulbs to bloom this spring. The May 4 event celebrates the emergence of the tulips, and the painted rocks will be added to the garden.

The Council on Aging and Recreation Department also offer programs that promote socialization, Barmashi stated.
