A simple idea with a meaningful impact: Sunshine & Support Baskets

Testing season can be a stressful time for students. Between performance pressure and long testing days, it’s easy for anxiety to build. That’s why small, intentional acts of support can make such a powerful difference.

At Ridge Road Elementary School in North Haven, CT, the PTA is finding thoughtful ways to show up for students, not just academically, but emotionally as well. Through their Sunshine & Support Baskets, they are creating moments of calm, encouragement, and care while reinforcing the importance of mental health during testing season.

Each basket is filled with simple tools designed to help students feel grounded and supported. Items like stress balls to squeeze, coloring pages for mindful breaks, calming strips for desks or laptops, and handwritten notes of encouragement. These small gestures serve as gentle reminders that students are not alone, and that their well-being matters.

Now in its second year, this initiative is becoming a meaningful tradition, one that not only supports students in the moment but also helps normalize conversations around mental health in the school community.

A Message That Matters

At the heart of these baskets is a simple but powerful message:

A test is just one moment in time.
It does not define who you are or all that you’re capable of.

Students are encouraged to take a deep breath, believe in themselves, and simply do their best. Knowing they have a community cheering them on every step of the way.
