“Hi, my name is Quinn and I am here to share my story as a part of men’s mental health month. One of the biggest struggles I had growing up was figuring out my gender identity and learning to navigate a world being transgender. I identify as transmasc and I have been since I was about 15 years old. I am currently 20 this year. I did not have many mental health struggles that stemmed from gender identity itself through my adolescence but I did have trouble speaking about my gender identity or defending it in public. That led to me getting misgendered repeatedly in places where I had to frequent (such as school). I know that different people have different reactions to being misgendered but for me it would make me extremely uncomfortable and frustrated that I looked the way I do.
My friends were my biggest supporters throughout my life. My family has conservative views on gender and sexuality so I could really only be my true self around friends. The best thing I did was to find a good group of people who I knew would be accepting of me if I came out to them.
The internet also offered good resources and strategies to help navigate the world throughout my transition. There are many people online who share their experiences and that helped me to feel less alone in my dysphoria. I also learned about many different types of medical transition online and how I can access them on the internet.
For any other trans people out there, my best advice is to find a community, in person or online, where you can be yourself without worry. That truly was what helped me the most in feeling like my identity was valid even with an unsupportive family.”
Thank you, Quinn, for trusting us with your story. Your voice is powerful, and your willingness to be vulnerable helps light the way for others navigating similar paths.
