When people talk about self-care, it usually sounds like taking a break, putting your phone on Do Not Disturb, or treating yourself. And that’s real, rest is important. But lately, I’ve been thinking about a different kind of self-care that doesn’t get as much attention: discipline.
I’ve found I feel most confident when I stick to a routine. Not one that’s super rigid or restrictive, but prioritizing the things I know help me feel like myself; drawing every day, moving my body, eating meals that fuel me, staying on top of work, checking in with how I’m actually doing. When I follow through on those habits, my mental health feels more solid. I’m less anxious, more focused, and have a greater sense of control over my days.
Sticking to my art routine, especially drawing daily, has also directly improved my tattooing. Practicing every day has pushed my skills forward and made me more confident in my work. It’s proof that steady effort over time really does pay off.
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that manifesting or visualizing your goals is enough. And while mindset matters, I’ve learned that small actions matter more. Discipline doesn’t mean being hard on yourself. It means showing up for yourself in a way that builds trust and momentum.
While it’s less flashy than curating a Pinterest board to build your dream life, there’s something really grounding about keeping a promise to yourself. It reminds you that you’re capable, especially on hard days. So if you’re trying to take care of your mental health, think about what daily actions actually support you. Not what looks good online or fits some aesthetic, but what genuinely helps you feel stable and strong. Even just one small thing you do consistently can make a difference.
