Lincoln Academy volunteers who planted tulips in conjunction with the Yellow Tulip Project on October 10, 2019.
On October 10 Lincoln Academy student volunteers gathered in Veterans Memorial Park in Newcastle to plant more than 80 bulbs as part of the Yellow Tulip Project, which is a Maine-based non-profit program whose mission is to reduce the stigma around mental illness.
The project was organized by Lincoln Academy social workers Lisa Katz and Tory Wright and science teacher Steve Cheff, with assistance from Newcastle Veteran’s Memorial Park committee member and volunteer Betsy Evans. Renys generously donated the tulip bulbs.
“Anxiety and depression are all too common among teens,” said Katz, “and LA is no exception. But digging in the dirt and eating pizza with friends felt like a great stress-reliever, and we can all look forward to both sunshine and vibrant tulips in the spring. This project is a great metaphor for dark emotional states – that no matter how long and dark the winter is, the tulips will come and they are beautiful, resilient, and full of hope.”
LA volunteers have also planted a garden filled with yellow tulips in the LA courtyard that blooms each May.
