LIMESTONE, Maine (WAGM) – Limestone will look a little different next spring thanks to 500 yellow tulips planted in honor of a Rotary leader’s fight against suicide.
The Limestone Rotary Club sponsored the town’s Yellow Tulip Project in honor of Suicide Prevention Month and in memory of Aroostook County’s Rotary District Governor Serge Poulin (Sur-j Poo-lin), a strong advocate for suicide prevention, who died in a traffic accident on August 3rd. The Rotary bought 500 tulip bulbs for the community to plant throughout town. Over the last several weeks, Rotary members, community members, and students worked together to plant the tulips. One hundred bulbs were planted at Limestone Community School. 300 more were planted across town at places like the town office, post office, park, local churches, and even under the town welcome sign. The last 100 bulbs were sent to Dawn F. Barnes Elementary in Caswell, where students planted them.
The Limestone Rotary says it was a meaningful project that brought community members out for a good cause, saying quote: “Yellow tulips represent happiness, hope, and a reminder that even in dark times, support is available. Together we can plant hope and make a difference. We are grateful for the support from the community towards this project and look forward to seeing these bursts of yellow this spring as a reminder of this project and what the tulips represent.”
Now, the Rotary and community are waiting for spring, when the tulips will bloom throughout town as a lasting, colorful reminder that hope and support are always within reach for anyone struggling.
